The Core of Hope

The Core of Hope: Faith, Family, and the Foundation of a Good Life

The world today seems defined by division, cynicism, and a growing sense that the best days of our nation are behind us. We see hearts growing cold, conflict replacing conversation, and a palpable anxiety about the future our children will inherit. Yet, my own life, built upon decades of hard work, dedicated fatherhood, a career in protecting others, and the rigorous discipline of martial arts, points to a clear, unwavering source of hope: my relationship with Jesus Christ. This is the foundation upon which everything else—my family, my country, and my commitment to serving others—stands.

The Unchanging Master

For many years, I have studied the martial arts, training across various styles like Shotokan, Shuri Ryu, and Japanese Jujitsu, and developing my own system, Sekkinsen Goshin Jitsu. I have earned titles, but I prefer simply to be called “Sensei,” or instructor, because I believe there is only one true Master, and His name is Jesus Christ. My faith is not separate from my training; it is the source of its purpose.

While some fear that martial arts conflict with Christian principles, I view the discipline as a tool, no different from a hammer or a handgun. Its value is determined solely by the intent of the user. I believe God expects us to be ready to defend our loved ones, and karate teaches the mental and physical preparedness to do so. It is a commitment to personal growth, discipline, and the pursuit of peace—all done while prioritizing God and living according to His teachings. This discipline, cultivated in the dojo, is a visible testament to the spiritual discipline required to follow Christ.

The Pillars of Purpose: Family and Vocation

This spiritual core extends immediately outward to my second most important priority: my family. I was raised by parents who worked until their hands bled to ensure their three children were fed, often eating last themselves. We were poor, but we had everything we needed: God, family, and our church community. Witnessing my father’s quiet, sacrificial love laid the groundwork for my own commitment to my children and my desire to be a good man. Providing for them and setting an example of faith and integrity is my highest calling on this earth.

My vocation in law enforcement (Corrections) and security is also an extension of this service. Drawing on over 35 years of martial arts experience, I have trained security officers and civilians in practical, life-saving tactics. Whether teaching hand-to-hand defense, edged weapons tactics, or de-escalation scripts, my goal is always to empower others to survive and go home to their family. This calling to protect, to be a guardian, is a real-world expression of the love and guidance I find in my faith.

Looking to the Lord for the USA

The third pillar of my life is our great Country, the USA. My concern is for the heart of the nation—a heart that seems increasingly cold toward God and quick to choose hate over love, fighting over talking. I fear that the values of hard work, mutual respect, and sacrifice that I grew up with are eroding, leaving a future for my children that is unpredictable and harsh.

But fear does not have the final say. True hope—the kind that endures political chaos, cultural division, and personal hardship—is not found in any government, economic policy, or human system. It is found, as it has always been, in the Lord.

The solution to the deep challenges facing our families and our nation is a collective and individual return to the Master. If every person prioritized their relationship with their Savior, put their family above all else, and carried out their work and duty with love and self-sacrifice, the landscape would change instantly. The discipline of the martial artist, the sacrificial love of the father, the dedication of the (Corrections) security officer—all of these virtues become powerful forces for good only when they are rooted in the ultimate source of goodness. Our only true and lasting hope, for ourselves, our families, and the future of our great country, is Jesus Christ.
