During the first 5 years Mr. Surrett also worked as a Part Time Park Ranger for the city of Asheville, Provided Security during soft ball, volley ball games and tournaments.

Mr. Surrett began training in Karate at the age of 17, the First Dojo I went to was a Shotokan School.

I only trained a few weeks at this school, in the spring of 1989 I saw a Flyer for a New Karate School opening near my high school. So I went to check it out, I found the instructor very helpful and he and I become Friends.
5 years I trained under Sensei Bohannon, who was a student of Roger Jones the founder of Karakido System.
I know there are a lot of traditionalist who don’t like or support Karakido, but I found the system to be very usefully in self-defense. In fact I use the system as my base system.
After our school Closed, I trained with Sensei John Thomas for 6 months, as private student.

Then in 1995 I began to train with Carl Wilcox, a student of Hanshi Anderson founder of Kwanmukan (Kwanmuzendo-kai)
and in 2007 was promoted to black belt in the USA Karate Federation, in 2011 I opened my Dojo, and it ran for about 9 months. Closed due to my back injury..

2007 I joined the Brotherhood of Martial Artist, a Great Group of Martial Artist!.
In 2008 I was appointed to the Board of Directors, The BHMA is and has been one of the greatest influences in my Martial Arts history. During my time with BHMA I met Dr. John Enger 10th Dan., Dr. Enger has become a great friend and mentor, he holds important Classes and Seminars. I’m honored to be part of the Shinja Martial Arts College and Shinja Buke Ryu System.
